When Should You Buy an LED Light?

There is a buzz around the LED lighting. Considered the future of lighting, LED lights are gaining popularity because they are really energy efficient. A typical home bulb can be replaced by an LED globe that uses no more than 10% of the electricity used by the original bubble. This represents a good saving in the household and a significant saving for a commercial office or factory. But there is a catch.

The cost of these LED Lights is considerably higher than the conventional lighting you probably still use. So how do you determine if you will get the increased purchase price of your electricity savings?

A simple way is to look at the number of hours of light use. So for a 60-watt bedside lamp, say 1 hour a day, you won't use it more than 365 hours a year. That's 365 x 60 watts x 1 hour - 21,900-watt hours or 21 kilowatt-hours. At $0.1 per kilowatt-hour, or $2.1 per year.

Now take an 8 watt LED light (for equivalent light output) in the same use and you get 365 x 8 watts x 1 hour - 2920 watt-hours or 2.92-kilowatt hours. At $0.1 per kilowatt-hour, or $0.292 per year.

So we have an annual saving of $2.1 to $0.292 - $1.80 per year.

Great! But when you look at the cost of each bulb, you realize that the cost of an LED bulb can be US$20 and a conventional bulb can be US$1. This means it will take more than 10 years to get your money back. Not so good.

Now change usage to 6 hours a day, for example for lighting your living room and kitchen and the justification of LED lights becomes stronger. Now your electricity cost will be 365 x 60 watts x 6 hours - 131-kilowatt hours and 13.1 USD per year compared to 17.5-kilowatt hours and 1.75 USD for the LED bulb. You can now pay back the LED bulb for electricity savings in less than two years.

It's a much better return on investment and it becomes a good decision because you'll also reduce carbon emissions and do your part to reduce environmental destruction. If you use your lamps longer, for example in a professional environment, your return on investment also increases considerably.

So don't rush to buy an LED light Pakistan. Think about the duration of use and the cost of purchase. Then make an informed decision.
